Why do I always get the main screen (or part of main) only on my iPad?

According to feedback we have collected, we found this issue usually happens on the desktop side.

A.  Desktops usually have multiple VGA output connectors with two types of interfaces.  For example, one DVI and one D-sub, or one Displayport and one D-sub.  When you encounter this issue, please confirm that the connector used for your main monitor is following the rules:

1.  If your connectors are DVI and D-sub:  please use the DVI connector to connect your main monitor, and press "Win key"+P to open display types (4 types shown usually), then select the leftmost option, "Computer only," as shown below.  After you have done this, use the iPad to connect to your computer again, and it should display your extended screen on your iPad.

2.  If your connectors are Displayport and DVI (or D-sub), please use Displayport to connect your main monitor, and press "Win key"+P to open the display types (4 types shown usually), then select the leftmost item ("Computer only") as shown below.  After you have done this, use the iPad to connect to your computer again and it should display your extended screen on your iPad.

B.  If your Win7 is running under a Mac computer, please try the following steps to verify if Splashtop XDisplay can be used on your computer.  (This way also applicable to identify any environment.)

1.  Connect a second monitor to another VGA connector interface.

2.  Right mouse-click on the desktop screen, and select "Screen Resolution" to open a window like below.

Win7_Screen_Resolution.png

3.  Press "Win key(Command key)"+P, and select the third item ("Extend").  If there is still only one monitor that can be emulated like above, it means Splashtop XDisplay can't be used on your computer.

It may help to update the display driver for your computer.

Please enter a Comment below and tell us your connector types and connection-related settings, if you still only get the main screen.

    I am connecting with my laptop which has VGA and HDMI ports, but no external monitor connected.  I had XDisplay working properly -- extending my desktop -- before I purchased it, but after I purchased it, it stopped working.  Now when I run it, it just duplicates my main screen.  I've ensured that I have the latest versions of XDisplay and Splashtop Streamer.  I've worked through the steps above -- after disconnecting, it did show an external monitor was present, so I set it to "computer only" and then selected "Remove this display." When I tried to reconnect, it again showed a duplicate of the main screen.  I tried switching to "Extend" mode, but it didn't change anything.  What else can I try?  It worked very well the first few times I tried it, but I haven't been able to get it to work again since it started this screen duplication issue.  Thank you for your assistance.

    @Adam,

    I'm not sure that HDMI or VGA has a higher priority in your system, could you try the following 2 cases?

    1.connect your monitor to HDMI only, then press 'win key'+P to switch display option to 'computer only', and try again

    2.connect your monitor to VGA only, then press 'win key'+P to switch display option to 'computer only', and try again

    I got part of main screen after follow the instruction above. Also, after I tried all 4 options of WIN key + P, the best situation is same screen on my main monitor and iPad2. I am connecting to my desktop, and VGA card has DVI port and D-sub port. My main monitor is connected to DVI port, and D-sub port has no device connected. Hereunder is HW and SW configuration. VGA is ATI Radeon HD 5570 VGA Driver is Catalyst Version 11.8 OS is WIN7 64 bit with last update Main monitor resolution is 1920*1200 Splashtop Xdisplay rev 1.0.0.1 Splashtop Streamer rev 1.6.0.1

    I wasn't able to try this over the weekend, but today I had access to an external monitor and connected it via VGA to my laptop.  After disconnecting it, I was again able to successfully connect with XDisplay.  Thank you.  Hopefully I can avoid this in the future; I don't always have an external monitor to fix it this way -- that's why I need XDisplay!

    @Dick,

    Here are some suggestions for you:

    1. Could you follow the instructions on B above to verify if your environment can emulate extended display?

    2. please follow the instructions 2-II (Your computer "thinks" that another monitor is attached to it. ) on this link to correct the settings about display on your system:

    Thanks for your suggestion! "To remove second monitor from multiple displays" works when I use D-sub port, but don't work when I use DVI port. One way to work is good enough now, hope it can work for DVI port soon.

    Have exact same problem... Was working perfectly until I upgraded. Now, all I have is the same display on both the monitor AND the iPad, regardless of settings. Tried all the suggestions about removing the second display that computer "thinks" is there, and reconnecting, and Win Key +p. Main monitor is connected via DVI. Also available are VGA and HDMI. I don't have cable to connect HDMI, nor do I wish to. I even tried deleting the app, restarting iPad, re-downloading app with the ads and not "upgrading," and I'm getting same thing: Same display on both monitors. No matter what  settings I try to establish, it always reverts to Show desktop only on monitor 1. for both. (Despite the presence of "2" indicator in screen resolution settings for the iPad, the "1" will be displayed on both the main monitor and the ipad when you hit identify.)

    @Tammy, Byron, David,

    Could you try:

    1.remove the second display from Screen Resolution dialog while no XDisplay connected

    2.win key+p to select computer only

    3.connect with Splashtop XDisplay (DVI interface or other priority#1 interface connected)

    4.win key+p to select "Extend" if you still only main screen

    5.check Screen Resolution dialog, and confirm "Extend" has been selected.

    Okay! I followed the steps you outlined here -- and got the same thing -- duplicated screens. I was running the 10-minute-limit version of XDisplay,

    I then disconnected, and exited the app via iPad's multi-tasking bar,

    I then returned to the screen resolution dialog and tried to remove the second monitor, but the option was not available. So, I utilized the Win-P dialog, selected computer only, and was able to return to the screen resolution dialog and remove the second monitor there.

    I then restarted XDisplay app on iPad, and got the extended monitor. I allowed it to die out a few times, and then re-connected without problem. So, I then upgraded the app via in-app purchase (which I'd already purchased) and it seems to be working well so far. I'll keep you posted! Thanks.

    @David,

    Sorry, I saw you are using desktop. could you share us what VGA interfaces your desktop has? please also confirm you have connected your monitor on the higher priority interface like DVI or Displayport.

    @Byran,

    Basically the first two steps should work for your case:

    1.remove the second display from Screen Resolution dialog while no XDisplay connected

    2.win key+p to select computer only

    Are you running your win7 on a Mac computer? Have you tried the instructions on this link mentioned above? (8 steps on 2-II)

    Jaff:

    No, I am running xdisplay on a LAPTOP, when I said desktop, I was referring to the workspace of my laptop.  I've submitted support ticket and it's been nearly two weeks since the last response and still no fix. My system is an Alienware M11X with Windows 7.

    Please note that xdisplay was working fine previously for 3 days, after which I could no longer extend the display and can only clone the display. Very very frustrating as I purchased the app hoping to use the iPad as a dual monitor for work.

    I've tried all prescribed methods of resolution to no avail (i.e. removing display, using win key + p, uninstalling reinstalling xdisplay, uninstalling reinstalling streamer, uninstalling reinstalling graphic drivers, etc.)

    Please make an update to fix this issue asap.

    I am in the very same situation at David Tran. Thank you for looking into this and fixing it. The strange thing is it was working fine as a second monitor and them it for some unknown reason stopped. I have tried everything and it still will not work. HP Laptop running Win7.

    @David,Byron,

    Have you tried this way?

    pre-request: connect to Streamer by XDisplay.
    1). Launch Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Display -> Adjust Screen Resolution.
    2). Click Detect.
    3). Choose the second monitor that just appeared and set it be "Extend these displays" in the Multiple displays drop down menu.
    4). Click Apply.
    5). Now iPad should be a extend display.
    6). Try to reconnect again.

    Jaff:

    Just tried what you've prescribed and it still does not work.

    I read what a previous poster wrote about connecting to an external monitor so I hooked my laptop up to my TV via hdmi. My M11X was able to detect 3 monitors and when I started xdisplay, the app actually worked and I was able to extend my screen. However, upon disconnect, the app stopped working again and it went back to clone mode.

    I don't know what's going on but hopefully this may help you in looking for a solution to this frustrating problem. Thanks for your help, btw.

    I am having the exact same problems as others using a new laptop with windows 7. If your product doesn't work you should stop selling it or compensate those who have paid you for it. At the very least you should warn others with a laptop not to buy it. To anyone who has not purchased this and is thinking about it - DON'T.

    @David, Chris,

    The suggestions I gave usually work for most of laptop cases. However, if they still don't work for your case, there's one another experiment you can do and another suggestion you can try.

    Experiment:

    You can connect another real monitor, and try if the second monitor can be an extend display. This can help verify if it's a problem on XDisplay.

    If the above experiment still can't work, it presents the settings on your computer got problems on extend display. Another suggestion you can try:

    In Device Manager, remove the Display card totally(pressing Del key or click uninstall button on toolbar), then reinstall your display driver can totally reset the display settings. Please note that this will destroy your display settings(back to a system default VGA setting), if you are not computer savvy or not confident to handle such a case, please consult your friend before doing this.

    @Jaff:

    Please read my earlier posts, I've already tried what you've prescribed.

    The problem lies with xdisplay for the following reason:

    1. I've hooked up my laptop to an external monitor and the monitor is capable of extending the display. I've also hooked my laptop to a TV as well and that, too, works. When my laptop is hooked up to an external monitor, xdisplay works. When the external monitor is unplugged, xdisplay stops working.

    2. I've already re-installed my video drivers, using the latest drivers from nvidia, and the problem with xdisplay persists.

    It is now 3 weeks into this problem and I've received no official response from support other than you in this forum. Please fix and release an update.

    @Jaff:

    Extended display works fine on a second monitor as well as a TV. I have tried your solutions and your product still does not work. If you don't have a solution I expect a refund.

    Thanks,

    @Chris,

    We are sorry not able to solve your problem at this moment. We'll keep looking into this issue.

    About refund, actually it's totally controlled by Apple.

    Anyway, here are the steps to request refund from Windows iTunes or Mac iTunes:

    1.To begin the process of requesting a refund from the iTunes store, you will need to first open iTunes.
    2.Navigate to your purchase history by clicking "Store">"View My Account">>"Purchase History."
    3.Inside your Purchase History page, select "Report a Problem."
    4.In the window that opens up to report your problem, describe your reason for requesting a refund. Be very polite and very detailed as to why you are requesting a refund and what exactly it is for.
    5.That's it! Apple customer service should usually respond to you within 48 hours and let you know if your request has been granted.

    @David

    In my case it was not Windows update but nVidia update by its own Control Panel. Anyway this helps to me. I think Splashtop apps are very good, and hope will be even better after their update....
