Why can't I extend the display on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10?

Problem

This is a limitation on Windows 8 or later. It is the change made by Microsoft that it does not support create a virtual extended display on Windows 8, 8,1 and 10.

Verification

Here is an easy way you could verify if it can create a virtual display on your PC:

  1. Make sure there is no any secondary monitor physically connected.
  2. Open display setting on your PC.
  3. Press Windows key + P, select "Extend display" and check the display setting.
  4. See if there is a virtual secondary display created.

Note

It might still support creating a virtual display on Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 using some video chips with specific version of the driver.

    I can use wired xdisplay as extended display before I did the 10th anniversary update for windows 10, now it stopped working after the update, is this a known issue?

    @Andy,

    We could still use Wire XDisplay to extend the display after installing Windows 10 Anniversary update. When you said stopped working, it means it could only mirror the display, or it can't connect?

    Please also check Programs & Features and see if "OSBase idisplay" is still installed, if not, please remove XDisplay agent then re-install it again, then see if it could work to connect using Wired XDisplay.

    I found a solution, installing the latest "OSBase idisplay" from here http://osbase.com/idisplay/ solved the issue. Thanks

    @Andy,

    We just gave it a try, our built-in OSBASE driver works but needs a restart to make the driver work.

    Thanks for the sharing!

    @Enaam,

    Sorry to hear that, maybe you can try boot into safe mode and remove that idisplay driver?

    I uninstalled the Agent Desktop app, unplugged my ios device, re-installed the Agent, let it reboot once to initiate the OSBASE installation. On next boot, then plugged in my device, and the 'Extend' desktop worked again--no longer just mirrored.

    @Andyteogc,

    Please go to Programs & Features to remove OSBase iDisplay driver(reboot required) then install the new one:

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/57605964/iDisplaySetup_v1.0.0.2894.zip

    Then see if it could work.

    I can only mirror the screen from Win10 to Android. Tried many ways, still can't extend the screen. And installing the 2894OBASE driver caused my Win10 unable to boot. I really want to use this software. If someone finds the solution, please put it here.

    This problem persists on Mac too. The display is mirrored and no option to extend. I'm on macOS 10.12.1 using version 1.2.0.2 on Mac and version 1.2.0.1 on iPad Pro 9.7". When can we expect a fix?

    I tried everything but still did not work. I formatted my laptop and clean installed Windows 10 and the latest version for wired X display but it did not work still only mirroring, I checked programs and apps I did not find OSbase, so I downloaded the latest OSbase for win10 anniversary update, but still only mirroring. Splashtop please solve the problem already and include the correct OSbase with the download file.

    @all,

    Sorry for the issue.

    We are working on new video drivers for Windows 10 so it could work to extend. On Mac OS Sierra there should be no issue.

    Please stay tuned, and sorry again for te inconvenience caused.

    v1.5.0.2 supports Win7, 8 extended screen and fixed the win10 AU issue.

    Don't forget to uninstall OSBase iDisplay driver before upgraded to v1.5.0.2

    Don't use the iDisplay driver.

    There is a new driver says "Luminoncore WDDM Proxy" in the Windows Agent (v1.5.0.2) which can support Win7, 8 and 10.

    Well,I re-installed the agent, it works but has  low frames, so I installed the idisplay driver but it damaged my graphics card drivers. Is there any solutions?(or other drivers recommandede?)

    The new driver uses the client as default resolution, i think your tablet has a 1080p or higher resolution. As you known, higher resolution with lower performance, you can try to select a best resolution under Windows-Resolution-Setting for your platform.

    i'm using a tabletpc (converts from laptop to tablet) running windows XP and i want to ues it as a second monitor because i want to use the tablet as a graphics tablet as well as a second monitor. splashtop works GREAT when im using it but the issue im having is that all i can do is mirror the main display rather than having the tabletpc being a second monitor which is why i started using splashtop to begin with as they said it could be done and ive see several videos showing wondows 10 doing the virtual monitor function

    Is there a way to use windows tablet as a second display over a wired/usb connection?

    When travelling and working in coworking spaces, I can often only connect one device to a network. Plus it would be nice to be able to use windows tablet as second display without even needing a network connection.

    Any thoughts? Seems odd we can do this with ios/android tablets easily, but no solution for windows tablets.

    My Fix - Navigate a Admin Command line to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Splashtop\Splashtop Wired XDisplay\Agent\Driver
    Run the install_64.bat

    Win+P key - select Extend

    I did install the OSBASE iDisplay for Window 10 that was posted about, don't now how much that is needed. But it works with it.
